When I woke up Sunday morning I had no idea I would be community Fermenting at the Pickle Party at Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles that day! Upon waking I did my normal scroll the email on my phone and there was a message, from one of my favorite kraut makers Brassica & Brine, that there was a pickle party going on just minutes from my place. Plus the guru of fermentation was going to be there, Mr. Sandor Katz himself! Holy Kraut! The auther of “The New Wildcrafted Cuisine Exploring the Exotic Gastronomy of Local Terroir.” Pascal Baudar, was also
right up my ally so I headed on over to Grand Central Market to explore this Pickle Party

So their goal was to invite the community to make a 1000 pounds of kraut. They thought this process would take all day, but they reached their goal by 1:30-ish that afternoon. District Market located in Grand Central Market generously donated the produce to the Pickle Party. Sandor Katz did a demonstration on fermintation as well a lecture on his essential theme of fermentation and culture.

There was a hand washing station, bowls, jars, salt, cabbage, and a lot of community hands squeezing for kraut juice. Everyone in the community who participated in the Pickle Party got to take home their jar of kraut. They also gave instructions for how to continue the fermentation process at home.

Some of the other Vendors there included: Brassica & Brine, Pickled by Hattie, Wax Paper, Dave’s Kimchi and Perishable Pickles. They also had a to of pickling tools for sale. I finally got my own copy of Wild Fermentation and of course got it signed by the kraut master.  Also all of the vendors within the Grand Central Market featured some sorta kraut, pickle or brine in their shops that day. Including Belcampo the butcher who featured pink pickled eggs and pickled lamb tongue. Way to step out of the box Decamp, but I don’t eat anything that can taste me back! Haha!

This was a very fun little impromptu adventure into the Grand Central Market! So glad to see so many people in the Los Angeles Community into the kraut & pickling revival!
